For many a trip to the dentist is an unattainable cost, but putting off a visit can lead to serious health problems. On Saturday, one local clinic waived their fees so anyone could come in for a checkup.<\/p>\n

From 8a.m. until 4p.m. Connextion Dental Care Group on Montreal Rd. was open for a free day of dentistry.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re serving our community, we\u2019re providing cleanings, fillings, extractions for free,\u201d said Dr. Shahram Yazdani.<\/p>\n


\nChristine Tinker, who does not have dental benefits, brought her two children for free checkups.<\/p>\n

Her four-year-old son Marcus received his first teeth cleaning, while her eight-year-old daughter Adia was in the dentist office for the second time.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think everybody should be able to at least have the opportunity to do it, at least once when it\u2019s free, and the kids can get used to it, you know,\u201d said Tinker.<\/p>\n

Staff at Connextion said a person should have their teeth checked every six months. If you do not have dental benefits it will cost roughly $220 dollars. If you require a filling or extraction, that price figure can enter into the hundreds or even thousands.<\/p>\n

Dr. Yazdani said a trip to the dentist is not just about a bright smile, but has significant health benefits.<\/p>\n

Some of the problems that can arise from poor dental hygiene include cardiovascular disease, oral cancer, gum disease and gingivitis.<\/p>\n

The serious health risks have some patients wondering why the services are not covered.<\/p>\n

\u201cDental care should absolutely be part of the healthcare system. It\u2019s directly related to the rest of the body\u2019s health, especially heart health,\u201d said Gary McCrank.<\/p>\n

Dr. Yazdani said there are services available for free in Ontario but they are not available for everyone.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not for everybody so we just want to try and do it for anybody who wants to be served to come out\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
